“Triple-digit temperatures can mean triple-digit water bills,” said Jimmie Dale, president of Baker Brothers Plumbing. “We have to water our yards and keep trees alive, but we can save water by fixing or replacing leaky faucets and running toilets at home. And when you save water, you save money.”

As part of its water-saving program, buy a water-conserving toilet in August from Baker Brothers Plumbing and save 20 percent. A water-conserving toilet can save over 4,000 gallons per person per year.

Here are some household tips from Baker Brothers Plumbing to save you money on your water bill:

Toilets: High-efficiency toilets use only 1.28 gallons per flush. Toilets installed before 1992 use between 3 and 5 gallons per flush. A low-flow toilet saves thousands of gallons a year.

Leaks around the flapper valve can waste 200 gallons or more per day. To check for leaks, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank of your toilet. After 10 to 15 minutes, if the bowl shows traces of food coloring, you have a leak.

Bathing: At five to 10 gallons a minute, a 10-minute shower can use up to 100 gallons of water. Take shorter showers and install a low-flow shower head. There’s no loss of water pressure, and you use half the water of a less efficient showerhead.

Laundry:  Your washer uses 30 to 40 gallons of water per load. High efficiency washers use only 12 to 15 gallons per load. Wash only full loads. Use the smaller-load setting for a few items.

Leaky faucets: Almost 14 percent of indoor water use is lost to leaks. A slow drip can waste over 7,000 gallons per year. Many drips can be stopped by simply replacing a washer.

Faucet aerators: Aerators can cut water use by 50 percent, saving up to 1,825 gallons per year per person.

Other tips:

•   Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth or shaving.
•   Rinse dishes in a pan, not under running water.
•   Use the dishwasher only for full loads. Dishwashers use about 15 gallons per use.
•   Keep a jug of water in the refrigerator to avoid running the tap until the water runs cool.
