The Challenges of Creating a Good Board

Is a constant challenge for nonprofits to find suitable candidates willing to make a boards' significant time commitment needed to be effective members on board.

Aug. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- Nearly half the chief executives find it somewhat or very difficult to recruit board members. The main reason it  is so difficult? People just do not have the time.

There are many demands on our lives: work, family, volunteer work, exercise, hobbies, friends and even sleeping. People are trying to find some balance in their lives and burning the candle at both ends is not a good option. Some people are already serving on several boards and simply can not - or should - bring in the form of another table into their schedules.

In fact, 56 percent of board members surveyed say they belong to two or more boards, with 13 percent in four or more cards.

Time Commitment Factors
 Board Size
»Personal Size
»Committee Assignments
»Organization challenges
»Level of personal commitment

The time commitment varies widely from board to board. While the average member spends 15.9 hours per month in the work of the Board, 23 percent spend four hours or less per month and 14 percent spend 30 hours or more.

And a member's commitment is often not limited on board and the duty of the committee. In the survey, 95 percent of board members say they have attended special events, 68 percent have volunteered for activities not related to pension rights, and 54 percent provided free services in-kind/pro professional organization.

When it comes to the hiring board, diversity is also a challenge. In the survey, 49 percent of CEOs say they are somewhat or very dissatisfied with the level of board diversity. And when asked why board members find it difficult, a 7 percent say it is difficult to find people with experience and availability, which also bring diversity to the board.

Ideally, the recruitment board should be an ongoing process. An organization should always have a group of candidates, where individuals are at different stages of cultivation. When a vacancy occurs, it is easier to revive communications. While each board member should be involved in identifying potential candidates and the chief executive should serve as a valuable partner in the search, recruitment should be directed mainly by the governance committee.

The committee's task of government is to find the best candidates to convince them of the benefits of board service, to present candidates to the board, and after the final nomination, make sure the new board members are well equipped to the best job possible.
