Special guest: John Luther Adams Instrumentation: Based on a 14th-century mystical text, Clouds of Forgetting, Clouds of Unknowing by John Luther Adams explores the essence of sublime contemplation that unites many of the world’s religious cultures, from Sufi to Native American. Adams, whom the New Yorker’s Alex Ross has called “one of the most original musical thinkers of the new century,” will fly to San Francisco from his home in Alaska in order to join us. A companion to the subscription season, the Contemporary Insights: Music and Conversation series presents intimate preview events devoted to the understanding and appreciation of new music. On each occasion, the ensemble presents one piece from the upcoming subscription series concert program, together with an open dialogue between composer, musicians, and the audience. Each hour-long performance is followed by a reception with complimentary wine and snacks.
