Aug. 2, 2011 - PRLog -- Dallas Veterinarian Dr. Rebecca Westbrook Finally Reveals the Truth on How to Establish a Bond Between Pets and Newborn Babies

“Bringing home a newborn baby is a joy for the entire family.” says acclaimed Dallas veterinarian Dr. Rebecca Westbrook. “But there is one very important question pet owners should ask themselves: How do you make sure your dog is as excited as you are with a new baby in the house?”

According to Dr. Rebecca Westbrook, the bonding between a child and your pet is very unique. It is the non-verbal communication that actually helps to create an amazing friendship and strong bond between baby and pet, especially with dogs.  It can be a very stressful experience for expecting parents to think about establishing a bond between a dog and a child. Dr. Westbrook advises every parent to prepare and plan for the arrival of a child and to educate their pets that a new baby is a positive addition to the family and that the baby also has authority in the house.

In an interview with publicist Tatyana Gann, Dr. Westbrook stated, “Start out by introducing your dog to all the new baby things. Let your dog look and check everything over. During this time it is important to use positive reinforcement to encourage calm behavior. Practice with a doll. I know this sounds strange, but many dogs jump on you or want to be in your lap. Now is the time to train you dog to sit or stand beside you when you are holding a baby instead of crowding you, seeking attention. Again, use positive reinforcement so that your dog is excited about learning!”

Dr. Westbrook encourages expecting parents to consult both a veterinarian and a pediatrician to have a check list of the things to expect, especially if it is a family’s first baby. Her caring and unique approach to establishing a strong bond has assisted numerous families.

Dr. Rebecca Westbrook recently revealed that her upcoming book would have several chapters on establishing a powerful and loving bond between children and pets. The Dallas veterinarian has dedicated her life to compassionate pet care and believes that every family deserves to have the happiest moments with their pets. Dr. Westbrook brings great value to her patients within Dallas and the surrounding areas. She wishes there were more programs that provided the education needed for expecting parents who are animal lovers.

In her interview, Dr. Westbrook provided the following information, which every expectant mother should know:

-After the baby is born, bring home a blanket or article of clothing, so your dog can adjust to the new scent. You may also combine this new scent with a doll for additional practice.
-When you bring your new baby home, first greet your dog without the baby. This allows your dog to be excited without having the stress of the baby. Then allow your dog to see the baby, but have your partner restrain your dog and practice being calm. Use positive reinforcement so that your pet thinks of your new baby as a positive addition to your family.
-Do not use negative reinforcement (yelling, angry tones, etc.) when introducing the baby. This could cause your dog to become afraid of the baby.
-Never leave a baby alone with a pet. Pets do not have a moral conscious. They do not know that they can hurt the baby.
-Never leave small children under the age of 7 alone with a pet. They do not understand how little it takes to hurt a dog.
-Teach your child how to treat your dog well. Don't ever put a dog into the position of having to set limits on your child's behavior. That's a parent's job.
