Local Authors Donating Proceeds To The Los Angeles Fund for Public Education
Local authors, Allegra Newman and Peter Trauth, are donating 100 percent of their proceeds from sales of their new writing journal, 365 Things to Write About, to the Los Angeles Fund for Public Education. The fund, which was established earlier this year by recently appointed LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy, allows private donors to specify where their contributions will be used to help the budget-strapped school district.
“I think it’s ironic that we live and work in a city which thrives on creativity, but many of our schools don’t have enough money to fund arts programs,” Newman pointed out. “When Pete and I came up with the idea for this book, we wanted to offer something which inspires and encourages people to write. Then while we were putting it together, we realized it would be a great way for us to raise money to help local organizations in need of funds, like the public schools. As soon as we heard about the Los Angeles Fund for Public Education, we knew that’s where we wanted some of our proceeds to go. I love that we can designate what our donation will be used for, and I really hope that others see the potential this foundation offers to kids who attend public schools in our communities.”
365 Things to Write About is a hands-on creative writing journal for people of all ages to write stories, poems, and their personal thoughts about a variety of topics. Simple in design, the book features 365 people, places, objects, actions, and concepts positioned at the top of blank lined pages. How each prompt is explored on the page is left up to the writer’s own imagination.
“It’s a great tool for journaling and practicing various writing styles. Every day, I flip to a random page in the book and spend about ten minutes writing whatever comes to my mind about the subject on the page. It’s certainly improved my confidence as a writer, but it’s also helped my creativity in other parts of my life, like at work,” Trauth said. “I think it’s something that anyone, not just writers, will benefit from using.”
One hundred percent of the authors’ royalties from sales of 365 Things to Write About between August 1, 2011 through October 31, 2011 will be donated to the Los Angeles Fund for Public Education. The book is currently available at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and other online retailers.
