UN Indicts Eritrea for Planning Car Bomb Attack

The leading story of the week was on the UN Monitoring Group’s report that indicted the Eritrean spy agency and the Oromo Liberation Front in the foiled bombing bid in Addis Ababa.

The leading stories of the week were in relation to the foiled bid in Addis Ababa, which the UN Monitoring Group report has been blamed on Eritrea. Accusing Eritrea of plotting the foiled bid, the UN report claims that Eritrean spy agency, working in cahoots with the Ethiopian rebel group, had planned to carry out destructive activities in Ethiopia and to make Addis Ababa like Baghdad. The report cites an audio conversation between the chief of the Eritrean spy agency and one of the attackers as evidence.

Also in the news was the “The World Investment Report (WIR) 2011,” which puts the global FDI inflow figure at $1.24 trillion. The report predicts a continued increase in the inflow in 2012 and 2013.According to the report, FDI in Ethiopia continued the declining trend last year.

Another important piece of Ethiopian news during the week was about the deepening famine and drought crisis in Somalia and the Horn of Africa. A UN report puts the latest figure of displaced in Somalia at 170,000. Meanwhile, militant group Al-Shabab continues to threaten international aid groups not to operate in the famine-struck region without seeking its permission, even as thousands have died as a result of starvation and malnutrition.
