July 30, 2011 - PRLog -- In today’s competitive market, it is very important to have every edge in your job search.   Therefore it is also very important to have an effective resume, cover letter, and social profile.   Even just one mistake on your resume can become a major issue and potential deterrent for an employer in hiring you. As such, before you begin submitting your resume, there are a few key steps you should take to ensure that your resume, cover letter, and social profile will be in top form:
1.    Read EVERY word in each document: Yes, I know this is very, very tedious, but nobody ever said attention to detail was easy.  A sloppy resume can and usually will move your resume from the pile to the trash. What is important to remember is that you have no idea what ‘grammar tics’ your potential employer may have. Using their instead of there may be an issue, or its instead of it’s – the list is endless. As a result, the only way to avoid these issues is to read each word of the resume at least twice, to be sure your resume is well written.

2.   Confirm the dates: Many years ago I had a friend who was applying for a management level position at a hotel in Las Vegas. These companies are notorious for following-up on application submissions to verify every piece of information. In his case, he had misrepresented a 5 month gap in his employment in order to avoid the lag on the resume. Moreover, the position was over 10 years prior. Nevertheless, when the potential employer conducted a reference check and noticed the time period was inaccurate, he lost the position.  In short, potential employers do no like liars. It does not matter what field or industry the position is, as a general rule, be honest.

3.   Contact your references: References are a tricky issue. This is because depending on the field you’re in, your personality, and how personal or outgoing of a person you are, you may simply not have any references. As the world becomes more technological, and people are working for themselves and as independent consultants in the virtual world, the reference is becoming less important, but some employers will still require that you provide at least one reference, that is somebody who is not related to you (read: do not use your sister as your former boss)

These are just a few of the very important issues in preparing for the job hunt. For more assistance, or if you are unsure you are prepared to draft your own career documents, consider hiring a professional resume writer.
