New Fixed Networks market report from Business Monitor International: "Iraq Telecommunications Report Q3 2011"

July 29, 2011 - PRLog -- BMI's Q311 update on Iraq's telecommunications market provides comprehensive coverage of recent developments in the country's mobile, fixed-line telephony and internet sectors. During this quarter we made some slight changes to our five-year growth forecast for the development of Iraq's mobile subscriber market because of faster growth recorded by the operators during Q410 and Q111. Our new forecast for the mobile market incorporates the latest subscriber data, published by the country's two largest operators, Zain Iraq and Asiacell, for Q111. Data on these two operators is published by Kuwait's Zain Group and by Qatar Telecom (for Asiacell). We continue to estimate the number of subscribers served by Iraq's smaller mobile operators, including the Kurdistan-based cellco Korek Telecom. Meanwhile, we introduced mobile ARPU forecasts for the Iraqi mobile market in this quarterly update. Our average monthly blended ARPU for the market is a weighted average of the available blended ARPUs which represent more than 81% of the mobile market by subscribers.

BMI estimates there were 23.561mn mobile subscribers in Iraq at the end of March 2011. This reflected a growth rate 1.2% q-o-q and 10.4% y-o-y. BMI notes the remarkable subscriber growth during Q410 and Q111 after a lull in Q310. We attribute this to network expansion and in increase in competition among the operators. In the future, BMI expects competition to be main factor driving mobile subscriber growth in Iraq. In addition to the arrival of France Telecom through the acquisition of a minority stake Korek Telecom, we expect the possible award of a fourth mobile licence to boost competition. By 2015, we expect mobile penetration to reach 95.5%, up from about 70% at the end of 2010.

In the absence of 3G licences to offer advanced data services and other higher value services, Iraqi mobile operators are turning to other value-added services (VAS) to boost revenue amid growing competition in the basic voice and SMS markets. AsiaCell seems to be leading the way with the launch of mobile facebook and voice chat services in May 2011. Meanwhile, Zain is focusing on expanding and upgrading its network. It has completed the first phase of its network expansion plans into Kurdistan and the rest of northern Iraq. The company also awarded network development contracts to Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) in April 2011.

As the August 2011 deadline for Iraq's mobile operators to list part of their shares on the Iraqi stock exchange, in line with the terms of their licensing agreement, Zain and Korek have confirmed plans to meet the deadline. AsiaCell maintains the view that the Iraqi bourse is not ready to host companies the size of the telecoms operators. However, we expect it make plans to comply with the government's directive.
