July 26, 2011 - PRLog -- A GROUP of talented over 55-year-olds will be showcasing their skills at the Glynn Vivian this month as the gallery displays some of the best artwork from the Wednesday Afternoon Adult Art Class.

The exhibition launch at the Swansea Council attraction will take place on Wednesday July 27 from 2pm and will be on display in the gallery's education room until Sunday August 21.

The exhibition, entitled Views from the Collection, is a series of reproductions from chosen artworks in the gallery’s permanent collection, which includes over 1,000 paintings and drawings.

Some of the original works are currently on display in the gallery and some of the chosen pieces have been taken from the gallery's vast online database, which is open for all visitors to view.

Swansea Council's Glynn Vivian Wednesday Afternoon Adult Art Classes have been running at the Art Gallery since January 2010.

In this time the participants have worked on a range of materials, from mosaic and printmaking to drawing and watercolour.

The sessions were initially set up to inspire the gallery's adult audiences to discover their creative side through classes focused around the collection, touring exhibitions and the exploring of a range of media through regularly visiting the gallery.

The classes give participants the opportunity to meet new people and to look at, discuss and recreate some of their favourite artworks from the gallery's collection.

Ray Ashby has been with the group from the beginning. He said: "I have been inspired to learn all about art by the classes I have attended and have enjoyed the company of the people in the class."

Christine Slee, another participant, said: "I have learned so much; it's opened up a whole new world. The finished framed work is impressive."

This exhibition showcases a small selection of their artwork to date and recognises the achievements of the class over the past 18 months.

Their dedication and enthusiasm to learn new skills and techniques has been recognised by the Gwanwyn Festival of Creativity for Older People which promotes the benefits of participation and exploring the artistic and cultural life of local communities and Wales as a whole.

Gwanwyn is a collaborative initiative between key national organisations led by Age Cymru, the Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Government.

No previous experience or knowledge is required and all of the sessions are free to attend.
