July 26, 2011 - PRLog -- BMI's Q311 update to the UAE's telecommunications market report incorporates market data from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and telecoms providers Etisalat and Emirates Integrated Telecommunication Company (du) relating to the end of March 2011. It contains an analysis of the mobile, fixed-line and broadband markets, and recent regulatory developments. It also contains our first five-year growth forecast for mobile ARPUs in the UAE, in addition to updated forecast for the mobile, fixed-line and internet sectors.

According to the TRA, there were 11.067mn mobile subscribers in the UAE at the end of March 2011. This represents growth of 1.3% q-o-q and 3.8% y-o-y. As in previous quarters, there continues to be a considerable difference (1mn subscribers in Q111) in the mobile subscriber data from the regulator and the operators. However, our analysis this quarter is based solely on the regulators official data. This is because of the regulator's clear definition of the method used to calculate the number of active subscribers and the use by du of the same method. We, therefore, calculate the number of active subscribers on Etisalat's mobile network by subtracting du's subscriber base of the regulator's overall subscriber base.

According to the TRA market data during Q111 there were also sharp increases in the number of fixedline and broadband subscriptions. The fixed-line sector recorded net additions of 261,000 subscribers or growth of 17.9% q-o-q. The TRA has not provided explanation for this sudden increase in fixed-line subscriptions, although BMI believes it is more likely due to the use of a different method for calculating the number of fixed-line connections as opposed to actual subscriber uptake, a view supported by the fact that the sum of Etisalat and du's fixed-line subscriber base now equals the regulator's figures. The broadband sector also saw impressive results during Q111 with net additions of 79,000 subscribers or growth of 10% q-o-q.

There were some major regulatory and industry developments during the H110, including the postponement of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) from the end of March 2011 to an unconfirmed date in Q311 and the withdrawal by Etisalat of its US$12bn bid to buy a 46% stake in Zain as well as its participation in the auction for a third mobile licence in Syria. BMI expects the introduction of MNP to increase competition between Etisalat and Zain and possibly drive further convergence of their market shares. Meanwhile, Etisalat's failed bid to expand its international operations resulted in a new strategy to focus on existing operations, including its domestic market. The company plans to invest about US$15bn over the next five years in the network infrastructure of its operations to make them more competitive. In the UAE, the company's focus seems to be on higher value mobile and fixed-line services. Etisalat plans to launch commercial LTE services by Q311, while significant funds have been committed to expanding its IPTV and VoD offerings.
