July 24, 2011 - PRLog -- (MIAMI, FL.) – Saturday, July 23, 2011—The Black Affairs Advisory Board was created by the Board of County Commissioners on July 12, 1984 to serve in an advisory and advocacy capacity on behalf of the Black World Community. Priscilla Dames, along with Steven Hunter Johnson, Lydecker Diaz, and Gerri Lazarre, TriMerge Accounting, were elected the board’s new officers.  Ms. Dames has served as the Vice-Chair the past three years.

The Black Affairs Advisory Board is charged with the responsibility of making recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners as they relate to the understanding and resolving issues affecting citizens of African descent.  Additionally, the Black Affairs Advisory Board collects and shares demographic information on its constituents; encourages community involvement and addresses issues which impact the quality of life for Blacks in Miami-Dade County.
Appointed by Former Commission Chairperson Dr. Barbara Carey –Shuler, Ms. Dames has been an active member of the board for eight years. Since Shuler’s retirement, Dames represents Commissioner Audrey Edmonson, District 3 who is the current Vice Chairperson of the Board of Commissioners.  During her longevity on the board, Dames has given much of her efforts to the Crisis Intervention/Respect Life Committee. This campaign has traditionally focused on youth violence and partnered with various institutions including the Miami-Dade Public Schools, the State Attorney’s Office and the Miami-Dade Police Association, providing village dialogues and implementation of the Civil Citation Program, which strives to keep young people from entering the criminal justice program through a cooperative diversion process.  Currently, the committee is responding to the recent spade of shootings through Recovery and Restoration activities and the development of the Miami-Dade Community and Secondary Response Teams. Chairing the Crisis/Respect Life Committee eased collaborative activities between the board and Wingspan.  Supportive activities include Village Dialogues on domestic and teen violence, Wingspan’s Hugs for Haiti Campaign as a response to the earthquake in Haiti and Men to Men conferences for high school students.  Other committees and foci include Economic Development, Education, Budget and Finance, Housing and Health Care.
As the chairperson, Ms. Dames represents the BAAB on the Community Relations Board (CRB).
