New market study, "Argentina Power Report Q3 2011", has been published

New Energy market report from Business Monitor International: "Argentina Power Report Q3 2011"

July 24, 2011 - PRLog -- The newly published Argentina Power Report from BMI forecasts that the country's power consumption will increase from an estimated 107.9TWh in 2010 to 134.8TWh by the end of the forecast period, assuming 2.3% average annual growth. After power industry usage and system losses, we see a surplus supply rising from the estimated 6.1TWh level seen in 2010 to 8.5TWh by 2020, assuming 2.3% average annual growth in power generation during the period.

Argentina's power generation in 2010 is put by BMI at 114.0TWh, having risen 4.3% from the 2009 level. BMI is forecasting an average 2.2% annual increase to 127.0TWh between 2011 and 2015. Thermal generation, comprising coal, gas and oil, is expected to grow by 2.3% per annum during the period to 2015, but growth looks set to slow later in the decade.

We expect gas-fired power generation to climb 3.1% a year between 2011 and 2015, with an average annual growth rate of 2.7% forecast to 2020. Gas-fired generation should therefore reach 70.9TWh by 2015 and 79.2TWh by 2020. The share of total power generation should therefore increase from 53.4% to 55.8% by 2015, easing to 55.3% by 2020. Coal-fired generation will have accounted for 2.4% of the country's total generation in 2010, according to BMI estimates. We expect the fuel's market share to be 2.8% by 2015, firing a projected 3.6TWh. By 2020, coal's share of generation is forecast at 3.00%, representing 4.3TWh.

BMI estimates that 2010 nuclear power generation was 7.7TWh, climbing gradually to 8.2% by 2015. The share of generation is forecast to ease from 6.7% to 6.5% during the period. Successful completion of Atucha II could change our forecasts for 2012 onwards. Industry observers believe that Argentina has scope to expand its hydro-electric capacity significantly, having thus far exploited less than a quarter of estimated potential. BMI is predicting 34.4TWh of hydropower generation by 2015, accounting for a potential 27.1% of total generation.

Argentina is ranked fourth in BMI's updated power sector Business Environment Ratings, behind Chile, in spite of its market size and low energy import dependency. Peru is some way behind and poses no immediate threat. The Argentinean power sector is competitive, with more progress towards privatisation than seen in most other countries. The regulatory environment has deteriorated in the last few years, thanks to government intervention in energy pricing, but remains more attractive than in other parts of the region.
