Budding Entrepreneurs Among Non-Business Undergraduates
Who says non-Business students can't be Entrepreneurial? Read on about a group of hospitality and polytechnic students who completed the NEXT Entrepreneur Program and what it's all about.
These students managed to complete the NEXT Entrepreneurship Program with the encouragement and support of Berjaya University College of Hospitality and Kolej Politeknik MARA despite not having an in-depth knowledge in business school subjects. These forward thinking Institutions of Higher Learning exemplify the importance of an entrepreneurial mindset among students regardless of the course of study to nurture quality human capital.
Though technical skills are rather industry-specific, an entrepreneurial mindset remains relevant across all industries. These students now have an added advantage over their peers. It shows that they too can be just as business savvy as their business school counterparts. Here's what these students have to say about the NEXT Entrepreneur Program...
When asked to name one key concept that has the most profound impact on them, Madeline, a student said "To start a business, don't use your own money. If you need to use your money, the business idea is lousy." Another student, Yu Ye, also commented that "It is very helpful for youngsters especially those who lack financial knowledge." Students completed this 2-day program over 2 weekends but the learning does not stop here.
After completing the NEXT Entrepreneurship Program, students are required to submit business ideas which they could launch with an initial capital of RM100,000. Viable business ideas will be selected for "listing" on the NEXT Stock Exchange to be traded by their friends. The NEXT Stock Exchange is open to the public to register as traders for free. The exchange and stock prices are affected by macroeconomic variables and the invisible hand algorithms. Trading will commence in early August for 1 month. Winners get to win prizes up to RM35,000 for the best trader and RM60,000 for the best managed company.
MoneyTree is an education company which conducts financial literacy and entrepreneurship programs for kids age 6-17 years old, undergraduates and youths. The New Enterprise Exchange is the latest program offered besides the Young Entrepreneur Startup Challenge, MoneyTree Idea eXchange and Financial Literacy Program.
