Follow on Google News | Move to Unite European UprisingsRepresentatives from the principal organisations coordinating European protests and uprisings including Democracia Real Ya (Spain), ΑΓΑΝΑΚΤΙΣΜΕΝΟΙ (Indignants) Greece, Reelle Democratie (France) moved to form coalition.
This first attempt to strategically empower the movements with a collective symbol is supported by national and local groups from a wide range of European countries including ones directly affected by the EU/IMF bailouts and the consequential austerity measures such as Ireland, but equally from organisations in Europe's most solvent nations such as The Netherlands. The bid for the symbol, launched to the public today, specifies the organisations are looking for a “solidarity icon - open, positive and inclusive to all”; one which demonstrates “the commonality among the movements” and “strengthens all movements which put the interest of people before profit”. To aid its free dissemination ahead of world protests planned in October, the specifications stipulate the selected winning icon will automatically belong to the public domain. It will be distributed with the tag “International Real Democracy Now” in multilingual variations but will not belong to or represent the manifesto of any single organisation or group, including those bearing similar names. Inspired by the civil spirit of the European movements, the open bid will be run on a design contest website which enables anyone to freely submit designs. Normally geared for commercial projects including logos for fast food chains and international airlines, the site will run this bid as a non-commercial initiative funded by donations. It will tap into the same community of international designers which normally specialise in brands for marketing purposes. The coalition's first step is designed to increase awareness and identification of the many groups it represents, their weight in Europe and the commonality of their message. A link to the competion is published on: http://www.InternationalRealDemocracyNow.org and the bid requirements can be found here together with instructions for submitting designs: http://www.increable.com/ - ENDS - ANNEX Throughout history, and especially during times of important change, symbols emerged and propelled ideologies. Their ability to unite and move people in times of controversy is clear. The coalition's move is a natural progression. Current developments in the streets of Europe present the need for a symbol which goes beyond language and nations. The parallel in symbols rising from the streets in the past and the movement's intention to develop this icon through the present day equivalent with social media is deliberate. The open and collaborative contest is intended to seed awareness of the coalition, engaging the public with the initiative from the outset. Participation is the basis to this “brand” creation, from the submission of designs through to the selection of the winner. The symbol will be released in September, once the contest and voting process have finished.
