New Market Research Report: Southern Africa Telecommunications Report Q3 2011

New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

July 20, 2011 - PRLog -- BMI's latest update on the telecommunications market for Southern Africa contains updates to the region's mobile, fixed-line and internet markets. Our five-year forecasts through to 2015 for the three sectors have changed for some countries following the publication of latest subscriber figures by operators and regulators. Our mobile forecasts are based on Q111 data published by a number of regional operators, including Portugal Telecom, South Africa's Vodacom and MTN, France's Orange and Luxembourg's Millicom International Cellular.

There have been a number of notable developments in the region's telecoms markets in the last few months. These include the disconnection of unregistered SIMs in Zimbabwe, which resulted -to the loss of about 2.4mn lines, according to the Postal and Telecommunications Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ). BMI notes market leader Econet Wireless lost 1.4mn customers, while second-ranked Telecel and state-owned NetOne lost 692,000 and 300,000 customers respectively. Considering the subscriber losses in Zimbabwe and the likelihood of slower growth because of mandatory SIM registration, we revised downwards our growth forecast during the next five years. We expect mobile penetration in Zimbabwe to be about 71% by 2015. In Botswana, the government took another major step towards part privatising the incumbent operator Botswana Telecommunications Company (BTC). Botswana newspaper the Sunday Standard reported in March 2011 that a consortium of members from Deloitte and local law firm Collins Newman & Company has been hired to advise on the privatisation of BTC.

Other developments include plans by operators to invest significant amounts in network development and expansion. In February 2011, Airtel Zambia said it intends to launch 3G network services in the second quarter of 2011. This followed then announcement that US$150mn had been set aside for network infrastructure investment. Airtel's commercial director Mark Ocitti said 150 base sites were already installed, while an additional 300 sites will be introduced by end of September 2011. MTN Zambia launched its mobile broadband internet services in the country on March 1 2011. The service is based on EDGE/3G technologies and is configured to enable subscribers to use high-speed internet across any location on the operator's network

Meanwhile, many broadband markets in the region are set to see strong growth with the arrival of submarine cables on their shores and the connection of international bandwidth from those cables to existing of newly built national backbone systems. In February 2011, TelOne of Zimbabwe announced it had connected to the SEACOM and EASSy submarine cable systems while the West Africa Cable System (WACS) landed on shore at Swakopmund in Namibia, signalling the first cable bandwidth to reach that country despite Namibia being a part of the SAT 3 cable system. The WACS fibre-optic cable will provide Namibia, Botswana and other southern African countries access to super-fast and reliable data transmission at speeds of up to 5.12Tbps by the first quarter of 2012. Meanwhile, Econet Wireless's mobile broadband service continues to grow rapidly in Zimbabwe. The operator announced that 1.8mn customers connected to its broadband service by Q111. The telecoms regulator is pushing for drastic cuts in internet tariffs, which should also contribute to the growth of its broadband market.
