By: The MuseBox Only a city as diverse and inspiring as Edmonton could produce a six-piece as creatively eclectic as The Consonance. Though each member comes from different musical backgrounds, as a group they have a knack for seamlessly weaving the varying sounds of jazz, funk, pop, rock, r&b and hip hop into one cohesive whole that is uniquely their own. This indie-music stew is skillfully and enjoyably explored on The Consonance latest EP, October. It didn't take long after meeting one another at Grant MacEwan University in 2008, that the individuals who would become The Consonance realised a certain inexplicable chemistry and began gigging and recording together. By the time they released their first EP, More Alive (2009), they had established themselves as a legitimate jazz/funk ensemble with serious songwriting abilities and a following to match. In July 2010, they embarked on a triumphant West Canada tour to support their first full-length album, Come The Day. The debut sold exceptionally well, garnering strong radio play and charting at college and tastemaker stations across the country. With heaven sent vocal harmonies and an eclectic sound that makes you want to break out your dancing shows, it's easy to understand the appeal. Though times and the line-up have changed, their mutual instinct for sonic experimentation, smooth melodic lines and danceable grooves has not. July will see The Consonance kicking off their coast-to-coast North America tour, including their first round of gigs in the States. Do yourself a favour - head out and support these ridiculously talented hometown favourites who have a penchant for playing in their underwear. The Consonance new EP October is available now at their live shows and will be available online later this month.
