New film reveals the genesis of NY Fashion Week
(New York, New York – July 7, 2011) The Tents, a new documentary directed by James Belzer, takes us behind-the-scenes with top fashion industry players to reveal the origins and evolution of New York Fashion Week. Trailers:
The film covers the chaotic inception of NY Fashion Week, with fashion shows taking place in venues all over New York City, from downtown discos to random lofts in SoHo. It explains the development of the organized fashion week presentation by The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) in Bryant Park in 1993, plus the subsequent transition of ownership to IMG. The story takes us through the social media revolution to the current incarnation of NY Fashion Week – now known as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week – that takes place twice a year at Lincoln Center.
The way NY Fashion Week has been organized, executed, relayed and perceived is very much like fashion itself – always changing and growing.
The Tents story (Runtime: 72 minutes) is told through dozens of interviews with individuals from all areas of the fashion business. Featuring key interviews with top fashion designers, including Betsey Johnson, Carolina Herrera, Donna Karen, Isaac Mizrahi, Tommy Hilfiger, Zac Posen and others. Plus, intimate interviews with top fashion magazine editors, including Glenda Bailey from Harper’s Bazaar, Hal Rubenstein from In-Style, Nina Garcia from Marie Claire, Stefano Tonchi from W Magazine, and Suzy Menkes from The International Herald Tribune. Commentaries from Carson Kressley, Michael Musto, Patrick McMullan and Robert Verdi bring humor to the mix.
Key voices also include the two individuals widely credited for making the original organized NY Fashion Week experience happen - Stan Herman, former President of The CFDA and Fern Mallis, former Executive Director of The CFDA and former SVP of IMG Fashion.
“Looking at the success of recent fashion documentaries such as The September Issue and Valentino:The Last Emperor, there is clearly a burgeoning interest in behind-the-scene stories about the fashion industry,” says The Tents Director James Belzer. “With a diverse range of voices, we take the audience on an exciting journey through NY fashion history. The term “The Tents” now resonates as a metaphor for the fashion show venue itself as well as the overall fashion week experience.”
The Tents is an original historical compelling overview of the evolution of New York Fashion Week, as well as a current state-of-the-
