American Filmmaker Completes Felix Austria! Docufeature with History

July 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Los Angeles, CA, July 14, 2011 -- Filmmaker Christine Beebe is wrapping up Felix Austria! a feature documentary six years in the making on her unique subject Felix Pfeifle, who crisscrosses the globe to deal with his father’s Huntington's Disease and his own mortality, immersing himself in the myths and culture of the lost Habsburg Empire. The film has already caused buzz for its discovery of the uber-charming Pfeifle and his dream-lead obsessions, and for its other subject, the late Archduke Otto von Habsburg, heir to the dual thrones of Austria-Hungary who died on July 4th at age 98. Dr. von Habsburg, as he preferred to be called in his long career as an elected German representative for the European Parliament and author of thirty books, gives his final and only interview in English in the film, with a candid reflection on his unique role in history that is drawn out by Pfeifle and is sure to find controversy. As son of a deposed Emperor, opponent of Hitler, confidant of President Roosevelt, tireless advocate for European freedom during the Cold War, and president of the PanEuropa Union, Habsburg has a great deal to say about his experiences with world leaders, and also about his dealings with a mysterious American follower whose life is also traced by Pfeifle, as the recipient of a container of the man’s sixty year correspondence with the Archduke.

Pfeifle’s life-affirming quest, which takes him literally across the U.S., and to Austria, Germany, Bosnia, and ultimately Jerusalem, has also made history. Habsburg’s recollection of the frenzied attempt to escape Hitler’s grasp in France and to rescue others, revealed the identity of a man whose initiative made escape from the Holocaust possible for thousands of Jews. The film records the moving recognition of Eduardo Propper de Callejon (grandfather of British actor Helena Bonham Carter) by Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority where Non-Jews who saved Jews at personal risk, are honored.

Felix Austria! is a life-affirming story that reflects the powerful spirit of individuality. It is about embracing a personal passion so whole-heartedly that one might even change the course of history and, serendipitously, bring meaning to other lives as well. Beebe contends that her film “is an expressive portrait of an extraordinary man who, faced with his own mortality, makes the most unlikely connection to a former crown prince only to discover his own inner sovereignty – which, if we’re willing to take that leap, we can all find.”
