By: Natasha Benjamin Born Robert Allen Zimmerman, he performed folk songs at coffeehouses while in college and he took his stage name from poet, Dylan Thomas. And such, Bob Dylan was born. Dylan was inspired by the genre of blues and by the middle of college he knew he wanted to become a professional musician and artist. But who knew he would be more than that. By the early 1960s, Dylan was sought after by Columbia’s A&R. By 1962, he released his self-titled debut album consisting of a mix of blues, folk and gospel music giving consumers a taste of something different. Although his debut album was not successful, Dylan continued to work and he became well known within the folk community. Dylan began to stand out and he continued to as he played an active role in the Civil Rights Movement. By this time he was releasing his third album, The Times They Are-A-Changin’ Many watched this man cross over music genres and touch various audiences and by the mid 1960s he reached the pop community with his hit “Like a Rolling A Stone”. The song became number 2 in the United States and reached number 4 in the United Kingdom. “Like A Rolling Stone” was one of his songs that truly withstood the test of time and in 2004, Rolling Stone magazine called it the greatest song of all time.
