July 13, 2011 - PRLog -- Tennessee residents have been giving up group health insurance to the tune of 354,000 between 1999 and 2009.  A new study found that just three percent of these working-age Tennesseans had found alternative health coverage.  With most health insurance websites offering quotes first – questions later, people who’ve never shopped for health plans are lost.  In contrast to other online brokers, eTNHealthinsurance emphasizes “how to guides” and information about which options have the lowest out-of-pocket costs for the policyholder.

Figures from the nonprofit Robert Wood Johnson Foundation show a drop of more than 10 percent in Tennessee employer-based health coverage from 1999 to 2009.  This reflects a corresponding increase of 84.7 percent in premiums and 106.7 percent in employee contributions.  According to the study, the state's uninsured rate had jumped to 17.1 percent by 2009, up from the 1999 rate of 9.9 percent.

To address the growing rate of lost on-the-job coverage, eTNHealthinsurance has prepared their own study of how Tennesseans can replace group coverage.  These findings point out that a Health Savings Account Plan or an HSA Plan can have a lower price tag for most people, even those with a pre-existing condition.

According to eTNHealthinsurance numbers, someone with a chronic disease requiring five prescriptions would pay about $600 a month or $7,200 a year for a co-pay health insurance plan.  These plans have no deductible and include out-of-pocket costs for doctor appointments and prescriptions.  Five prescriptions with a $50 co-pay would run $250 a month or $3,000 a year.  With the annual $7,200 cost of premiums and $3,000 in co-pays, the total annual cost would equal $10,200.

With an HSA Plan, eTNHealthinsurance figures that premiums could average $375 a month or $4,500 a year for a policy with a $2,000 deductible.  Without including the tax savings available for HSA contributions, out-of-pocket costs for premiums and the deductible beat the cost of an average co-pay plan.  Annual premiums of $4,500 plus $2,000 in out-of-pocket costs to meet the deductible would total $6,500.  The $3,700 annual savings of the HSA Plan over the co-pay plan would more than fully fund an HSA for someone under 55.  The 2011 annual HSA contribution limit for individuals is $3,050, and those 55 or older may contribute an additional $1,000.

Tennessee residents who have to replace lost employer-based coverage need research like that available from eTNHealthinsurance.  While most health insurance websites urge visitors to run quotes first, eTNHealthinsurance puts answers first.  The most critical question for those trying to replace lost group plans is how to reduce their out-of-pocket cost for health care.  At http://www.eTNHealthinsurance.com, online tutorials show how health insurance is divided into different categories, such as co-pay or HSA Plans.  With these clear demonstrations of how the difference in policies can impact policyholders’ annual cost, more Tennesseans can restore their access to health care.
