July 13, 2011 - PRLog -- Following a year in which BMI believes the recovery began, 2011 will signal further growth in the majority of freight modes, although a return to pre-downturn levels is not yet on the cards.

Total trade is projected to pick up with our Country Risk desk forecasting a y-o-y increase of 6.85% in real terms in 2011 following an estimated growth of 12.39% in 2010.

Road freight is to continue to dominate the sector and is projected to grow by 1.9% in 2011. The sector did not defy the downturn but so far appears to have defied European Union (EU) pledges of a decrease in road haulage across the region, that is not to say, however, that road freight's market share is safe.

Key Industry Trends

Tibbett Logistics' Official Launch

UK-based privately owned holding company Keswick Enterprises Ltd, which has supply chain related businesses as its focus, has officially launched a new company, Tibbett Logistics (TL), in Romania in May 2011. In December 2010 Keswick acquired Delamode Logistics SRL together with the latter one's joint venture (JV) with DHL, DHL Delamode, from the shareholders of Delamode Group and DHL. The acquired companies are renamed Tibbett Logistics SRL and Tibbett Retail Services SRL respectively and together traded as Tibbett Logistics.

More Port Cooperation As Competition Increases

The heads of the country's largest port, the port of Constantza, and of Rotterdam Port have signed a Protocol of Cooperation between the two ports in April 2011. According to the ministers of transport of both Romania and the protocol is important for enhancing the economic relations between the two countries in the port sector. Earlier in the year, Constantza signed similar bilateral protocol on maritime co-operation with the Ro-Ro Pendik Port of Turkey with Romanian government hoping to make Turkish ports a key starting point for transporting Romanian exports towards the Mediterranean Sea. Romania also has similar co-operation protocols signed with Slovenia, Spain and Kazakhstan. As BMI noted earlier, Constantza faces competition for its role as the Black Sea's hub port.

DB Schenker Rail Renames Its Romanian Company

Logistic Services Danubius SRL was renamed DB Schenker Rail Romania SRL in May 2011, to make it 'clear to the outside world that the company is part of European DB Schenker Rail network' and to show 'customers that they can expect the same quality and services from DB Schenker Rail Romania as they are accustomed to receiving from DB Schenker Rail in other European countries'. DB Schenker Rail Romania aims at 'shifting more freight transport from the road to rail and offering customers continuous transports from a single source'.

Risks To Outlook

BMI highlights freight modes exposed to the transport of country's exports as the forecast areas which have risk to the upside as it is these modes of transport which will benefit from the fact that Romania enjoyed an exports boom through recent months with BMI expects country's exports to continue hitting all-time highs through the coming months.

We can also see an upside risk to our rail and inland waterway freight forecasts stemming from EU wide drive to move freight away from road.

The slowing-down or acceleration of the global recovery might affect Romania's exports and consequently present respective down- or upside risks to our forecasts for country's freight volumes.
