"Australia Telecommunications Report Q3 2011" now available at Fast Market Research

New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

July 10, 2011 - PRLog -- In our latest update on the Australian telecoms market only Singapore Telecommunications' Optus published latest figures for the quarter ended March 2011, while Telstra and Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA) had not provided figures although we base our estimates on local press reports. We estimate there were a total of 28.437mn, following quarterly net additions of 415,000, representing a significant decline from the 871,000 net additions in the previous year of the same period while it was below the quarterly average at 510,000 net additions.

Telstra accounted for the bulk of net additions with 442,000 followed by Optus on 103,000 net additions. Both operators have made significant gains from their postpaid subscriber growth as a result of attractively priced plans, smartphone handsets and services. Further, the operators were also able to benefit from VHA's loss of 130,000 as customers left the operator's network following poor customer and network service, which had received widespread coverage. In relation to this, it was noted by the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) that the number of customer complaints had risen by 31% in the first quarter of 2011, with Vodafone together with Telstra and Optus leading the charge. According to the Australian Communications Consumers Action Network (ACCAN) CEO, Teresa Corbin: "The industry will point the finger at Vodafone and say, yet again, that there is no problem. The truth of the matter is that complaints about customer service and complaint-handling issues continue to climb across the board."

Meanwhile the latest figures were published for the quarter ended March 2011 in terms of the number of broadband subscribers, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), at 9.739mn and driven by mobile broadband subscribers (excluding mobile handset connections) which reached 4.23mn, up by 49% y-o-y. Although the Australian internet market continues to phase out dial-up connections, there were reported to be 10.4mn internet active subscribers in the country (excluding internet connections through mobile handsets), representing y-o-y growth of 16.7%.

In view of the fact that wireless broadband is helping to boost the number of broadband subscribers, NBN Co is currently in talks with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to acquire unallocated 2.2GHz blocks. The company is deploying fixed wireless internet services to 4% of the Australian population where neither NBN nor satellite reach. The company recently acquired 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz of spectrum from Austar, a subscription TV company, in a deal worth AUD120mn.
