Big Brother Jumps on the Facebook Bandwagon- Busy Summer for Online Marketing Managers

If like me you thought the nation had said a final farewell to Big Brother, you would be wrong. I’m sure you heard the joyous news that the reality show will re-launch on Channel 5 this August.

July 20, 2011 - PRLog -- If like me you thought the nation had said a final farewell to Big Brother, you would be wrong.  I’m sure you heard the joyous news that the reality show will re-launch on Channel 5 this August.  Love it or hate it; I guarantee you will know someone who will be holed up in their home for the entire summer watching people sleeping on live streaming!

Anyway, that’s old news…

The interesting bit (I use this term loosely) is that viewers will be able to vote off Big Brother housemates via the social network Facebook for the first time ever.  It won’t be free though; Channel 5 has teamed up with the show’s producer Endemol, Facebook and mobile agency Mobile Interactive Group to develop a Facebook app that allows viewers to contribute to evictions.

The pricing is yet to be announced but what we do know is that viewers of the show will be able to purchase votes on either their PCs or smartphones.

James Tatam, Digital Director at Channel 5 told New Media Age that Facebook voting represents only part of the show’s overall social media and digital strategy.  Big Brother’s Facebook page will also include video footage, as well as real-time news and video updates.  Sadly for those individuals mentioned in the first paragraph, it looks like 24 hour online streaming has been buried along with Channel 4’s commitment to the show; they will have to make do with constant streams of video highlights instead- however will they cope?

In this digital era we would expect nothing less than for there to be a strong viral presence on other social networking sites such as Twitter and YouTube.  I think it is safe to say we will be seeing a lot more of Big Brother this year.  The online marketing managers at Endemol will no doubt have a lot to sink their teeth into with the re-launch - can the show’s online supporters boost the phenomenon that is Big Brother?
