Atlanta’s Turner Construction Company, tvsdesign and CDC Cut Ribbon on New CDC Building
Opening marks the completion of a 10-year building program at the CDC
The 311,000 sq. ft., 12 story office building is adjacent to the CDC’s headquarters building and will house offices for 1,343 people.
“The completion of CDC 24 marks the end of a ten year building program on the CDC Roybal campus,” said Shannon Hines, vice president and senior general manager for Turner Construction Company in the Southeast. “Turner and tvsdesign have the specialized abilities necessary to design and build a facility like this, meeting the strict requirements set by the CDC.”
Turner is the nation’s largest healthcare construction company. The company specializes in healthcare building, including acute care hospitals, academic medical centers, medical research facilities, and facilities for seniors.
The building is on track to be awarded LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) elements include a design that exceeds baseline energy requirements of ASHRAE 90.1 by a 30 percent reduction in energy use. It also includes a 30,000 gallon water cistern for water management and irrigation use.
"The sustainable design aspects of our work for CDC, such as the walkable campus, reduction of fossil fuel consumption, use of daylight in lieu of artificial light and elimination of VOC containing interior materials, are more than a response to mandates. They are integral to promoting CDC's goal of environmental health as part of public health,” said Susie Spivey-Tilson, director of tvsdesign’s sustainable design consulting services.
“Our work at the Roybal Campus has resulted in significant improvements in facilities that allow CDC to more effectively serve its vital mission in the world of public health and create a state-of-the art campus that will attract top scientists and researchers to join this mission, said Micah Rosen, associate principal with tvsdesign.
Unique Construction Challenges
Construction on CDC 24 began in June 2009 and was completed in June 2011. The project was a challenging one for both companies, with a very tight construction site.
“Careful phasing, staging and logistics were needed to assure high security and minimal disruption to ongoing operations on the CDC’s campus,” said AJ Bargoti, project executive for Turner Construction Company.
