By: Christopher Bernier The St. Charles 5K found a way to transcend the bounds of time and space by making it available to anyone, from anywhere. You can join them either by walking or running a 5k close to your home at a time convenient for you, or by covering the miles on your own, such as on a training day or on a hike. The scheduled launch is being slated for no later than the end of July, 2011. From that point on, you will be able to go directly to the website http://www.runningnuns.com to either register to run on race day or to run your race from where you are and still get your participation prize. "The love and support from racers and non-racers alike transcends any one day of the year,” stated Sister Mary Agnes Dombroski, Race Coordinator. “While we love to have everyone join us for this Labor Day Race. This year and for years to come we hope everyone will join us wherever they are and whenever they can The "race anywhere" concept allows people a fun way to donate to the St. Charles Children's Home. Rather than simply donating money, they can still participate in a great and well known event. The sisters have staffed the St. Charles Children’s Home in Rochester, New Hampshire, since 1968. The Children’s Home accepts children who have been removed from their family by court order and are under the protection of the Division of Welfare. The grief and anger flowing from a troubled past tends to erupt in disruptive and sometimes violent behavior in these children. In the spring of 1996, the sisters had a “family meeting” with the children to talk with them about healthy ways to release anger and negative emotions. The children came up with many ideas to vent anger in healthy ways. Soon Rose—one of their most aggressive girls—was going for daily hikes on a nearby trail with Sister Maximilian. By the end of the summer these daily hikes turned into daily runs. Meanwhile, the boys became jealous when they heard that Rose could run more than a mile without becoming tired. Since then, the sisters and children run four miles a day and participate in local 5k road races during the year. Thus, a great 5K event to support a great cause was born. The St. Charles Children's Home 5K will be in its 15th year in 2011. # # # Since 1968, the NH Catholic Charities of Rochester, has staffed the St. Charles Children's Home which accepts children who have been removed from their family by court order and are under the protection of the Division of Welfare.
