June 27, 2011 - PRLog -- Hyster has launched a new range of low emission ReachStackers for high performance container handling and believes that, in certain intensive operations, it can deliver fuel savings of up to 23%.

The Hyster ReachStacker, which has long been regarded as one of the most reliable and robust container handlers in the world  has been redesigned to meet the requirements of Tier 4 interim(i), Stage IIIB emissions regulations.

“This is good news for operators looking for an even lower cost of operation” explains Antoon Cooijmans, Product Manager for Hyster Big Trucks.  “Through Hyster intelligent design, the new Hyster ReachStacker is able to achieve up to 23% fuel savings in certain intensive operations.

Low emissions are achieved across the larger models in the Hyster Big Truck range using the new Cummins QSL9 (up to 370 hp, 276kW) diesel engine.  Combining cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR*) with an improved High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel system enables cleaner and more efficient combustion, and effectively controls NOx emissions.  The fully integrated Cummins Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) also reduces particulate emissions by over 90.

In addition to the Cummins engine technologies, Hyster has also introduced new performance optimisation developments, such as cooling on demand, load sensing hydraulics, RPM management and alternate engine idle speed, to help further reduce the total fuel consumption in all applications.

“We have calculated that the new machines can achieve a typical savings of approximately 9,000 litres of fuel annually” Antoon says.  “That is the equivalent of a full fuel tanker over three years on just one machine.”

“Furthermore, we have achieved this with EGR engine technology, which means that the end user does not have to change the way it operates. Diesel fuel is added to the tank in exactly the same way and the engine does the rest with no additional equipment, additives or maintenance regimes, unlike SCR** technology” he adds.

Operators can also select either an ECO-eLo “fuel efficiency” or HiP “high performance” mode. The HiP mode is the normal operating mode, whereas the ECO-eLo mode reduces the maximum engine speed and optimises fuel efficiency.

The new Cummins engines deliver rapid boost at low engine rpm and then maintain high boost at higher rpm independent of engine speed, thanks to the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT™) which varies the exhaust gas flow into the turbine wheel.

Numerous configurations of the Hyster ReachStacker are available in both container handling (CH) and intermodal handling (IH) versions for high density container stacking applications, up to 6-high and 3-rows deep.  The machines have been designed to achieve maximum space utilisation on container terminals thanks to outstanding manoeuvrability, superior handling speeds and unrestricted stacking capabilities.

The series is available with oil-immersed brakes, robust drive-axle and powertrain protection against potentially damaging operational procedures or faults, helping to maintain maximum productivity and dependability in the most demanding applications.

“Reliability is critical to ensure containers are transferred quickly and safely in these time sensitive operations” Antoon says. “The Hyster ReachStacker is proven in Ports all over the world to be tough and dependable.”

As standard, Hyster ReachStackers now include the Powered Sliding Cab for optimum visibility and the container weight display (also showing distance and height), to allow the driver to anticipate the truck’s capabilities before the stability / weight limit is reached.

The Hyster ‘Vista’ cab offers outstanding ergonomics and total driver comfort, with air conditioning options integrated into the ventilation system, low noise and vibration levels, and a choice of conveniently placed controls located to the right of the driver, to ensure maximum front-low level visibility.  Large windows, fitted with tinted safety glass ensure the driver has clear, all round visibility, particularly overhead.  This is further enhanced in poor weather conditions by a fresh air inlet, an effective heater and defroster and wipers and washers on front, top and rear screens.  Details such as sunshade screens are fitted on the top and rear windows and well positioned mirrors assist with the driver’s daily duties.

Responsive, fully hydraulic brakes and an automotive style pedal layout further contribute to driver comfort, with autoshift transmissions offering power and control to the driver with smooth gear changes.

Hyster ReachStackers are used to handle all types of containers, however new applications are being found all the time. The most notable adaption is in the renewable energy sector where Hyster ReachStackers are used to handle blade and tower sections.

Hyster products are distributed and supported through an extensive network of authorised, exclusive dealers, providing extensive local coverage through their sales and service locations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

Tier 4i / Stage IIIB models are available now and Hyster will still be offering Tier 3 versions of its equipment for sale to regions outside of the EU and North America.   For further information, visit http://www.hyster-bigtrucks.com.
