June 23, 2011 - PRLog -- NEW YORK, NY (June 23rd, 2011):  Media personality Jennifer S. Wilkov will speak this Saturday, June 25th, 2011, in New York City at the TEDxBroadStreetNY event held at The Hive at 55 located at 55 Broad Street, 13th Floor, New York, NY, 10004 from 1:00 – 5:00pm.

Ms. Wilkov’s presentation is entitled, “I Survived Prison: What Really Happens Behind Bars and Beyond.” During her talk, she will share the stories of what happened when she found herself at the center of a legal storm where she was incarcerated for a crime she says she didn’t commit, how she chose to handle her experience of being in prison, and how it has changed and shaped her life.

She has previously addressed this controversial case in her award-winning feature article that appeared in the April 2009 issue of Marie Claire and during her March 2009 interview on CNBC Squawk Box.

During her TEDxBroadStreetNY talk, Ms. Wilkov will reveal her insights from being sentenced to one of New York’s and the nation’s most violent prisons – Rikers Island –
to how she survived this unimaginable situation. Based on her experience, she will discuss her belief and newly discovered understanding that anyone in any situation, circumstance or condition has the right to remain fabulous and be free.

“I’m so delighted to have the unique opportunity to provide this engaging talk for the TEDxBroadStreetNY attendees,” says Jennifer S. Wilkov. “Everybody experiences moments of great glory and also those of utter despair.  Oftentimes, we are uncertain about what we are going to do when we are hit with what appears to be a devastating situation and, moreover, we are not confident about how we are going to handle it. TEDxBroadStreetNY is the perfect place to share how I chose to handle the unbelievable, life-changing experience of being in prison that had the potential to crush anyone’s spirit and self-esteem.”

“Jennifer has such a profound ability to reflect and learn from her extreme situation. We’re so lucky that she is willing to share her story with us at our TEDxBroadStreetNY event,” says Holly Landau.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.

TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
