June 22, 2011 - PRLog -- The Clean Air Campaign received a $47,127 grant from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS . The grant will be used to create an educational high school pilot program called Get There Green and to expand The Clean Air Campaign’s No-Idling Program.

The Get There Green program is designed to educate students about ‘green’ transportation planning in relation to air pollution and health. The goal is to reduce air pollution by teaching 'green' driving habits and empowering smart choices. Through the program, students will develop a school-specific action plan to reduce vehicle miles traveled to school and execute the action plan within the school year.
Get There Green will be introduced in as many as 20 high schools within metro Atlanta for the 2011-2012 school year. A broader implementation will begin the following year.

“Get There Green promotes critical thinking, collaboration, student leadership and ultimately an improved environmental outcome,” said Gretchen Gigley, director of education for The Clean Air Campaign. “We are grateful to UPS for this grant as it will allow us to continue to make strides in improving Georgia’s air quality and public health.”

The UPS Foundation grant will also allow The Clean Air Campaign to expand its outreach with Georgia schools, employers and property managers to reduce air pollution. This includes developing best practices and policies for reducing unnecessary engine idling, providing “no-idle zone” signage, distributing educational materials, and providing the tools necessary to measure the impact and success of idling reduction programs.

Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Ga., The UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In support of this strategic approach, The UPS Foundation has identified the following focus areas for giving: non-profit effectiveness, economic and global literacy, and encouraging diversity, community safety and environmental sustainability.

In 2010, The UPS Foundation distributed nearly $44.6 million worldwide through grants that benefit organizations or programs such as The Clean Air Campaign and provides support for building stronger communities.

“The UPS Foundation is committed to funding programs that make a meaningful difference in our communities – so we are proud to support The Clean Air Campaign’s efforts to continue to expand its outreach,” said Ken Sternad, president of The UPS Foundation.

About The Clean Air Campaign
The Clean Air Campaign is a not-for-profit organization that works with Georgia’s employers, commuters and schools to encourage actions that result in less traffic congestion and better air quality. To accomplish this goal, The Clean Air Campaign, along with its associate organizations, partners with more than 1,600 employers to create custom commute options programs; and annually helps thousands of commuters find commute alternatives that work for them, providing financial incentives to get them started. The Clean Air Campaign also protects public health by distributing Smog Alerts and empowers students, parents and teachers to play a positive role in reducing traffic and cleaning the air through a multi-faceted education program reaching elementary, middle and high schools.

Each day, these programs reduce 1.4 million miles of vehicle travel and keep 700 tons of pollution out of the air we breathe. For more information, call 1-877-CLEANAIR (1-877-253-2624) or visit CleanAirCampaign.org.
