Unicahome.com Announces USO Fund Drive

June 21, 2011 - PRLog -- As we head into the the July 4th Holiday, this nation has been involved in active conflict for almost 10 years.  The USO (United Service Organizations, Inc), founded in 1941, is a private, non-profit organization with a mission statement to simply "lift the spirits of of American troops and their families." We are all familiar with the entertainment USO provides, with Bob Hope leading the way.  Not as familiar are many of their excellent programs designed to support the troops leaving, returning, and keeping them connected with their families when they are deployed overseas. Unicahome staff recently took a tour of the USO center located at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas, one of 60 such centers located in the United States.


Staff from Unicahome met with USO Center Director Doug Bradford and discussed the mission of the USO and their current operations organized to help support our troops.  The McCarran USO Center is a well-kept 2,830 square foot converted airline lounge in the Main Terminal. Designed as a 'Home Away from Home' for the troops, the Center functions as a first-class lounge with Media Room, Meeting Room and Snack Areas. Open 24-7, the Center has 2 full-time staff members and approximately 150 active volunteer staff.  The Center (as well as the USO) is completely dependent on donations and has costs of close to $1000 daily to operate.

Mr. Bradford was busy preparing for 50 troops from the 650th Regional Support Group (Las Vegas) returning home from Afghanistan just in time for Father's Day. "When they go, they get taken care of. When they come home they need to be re-integrated. We take care of them." The USO Center works to get family members to the gates when the troops arrive, and the Centers serve as a place to unwind and relax, giving the troops a place to have a soft drink and watch TV in large, comfortable lounge chairs.

More importantly, the Center also assists families of troops who may be financially strapped, handing out toiletries and much-needed gift cards to soldiers that need them. Those small measures of support go a long way. An estimated 400,000-500,000 troops are assisted stateside this way yearly.

In an effort to support our local USO, Unicahome will match $1 donations on unicahome.com orders until the end of July. We will also offer a certificate for our clients sending valid gift cards to our offices. Gift Card Suggestions are for grocery stores, Wal-Mart, and McDonalds (or similar). Furthermore, Unicahome will donate additional funds for every sofa sold through the month of July.
