Coral Eclipse Betting Guide

June 21, 2011 - PRLog -- The two-day Coral Eclipse meeting is run at Sandown Park at the beginning of July each year and although there’s plenty of decent supporting races it’s the Group One Eclipse Stakes, run on the Saturday, that takes centre stage.

Run over 1m2f the race is open to horses aged 3 years or older and is one of the first chances of the season for that year’s Classic generation to pit their wits against the older horses, with Sea The Stars back in 2009 the last Epsom Derby winner to go onto take the Sandown contest.

12 months ago in 2010 Henry Cecil’s Twice Over landed the spoils to give the
Newmarket handler his fourth success in the race, while other trainers to note are Aidan O’Brien and Saeed Bin Suroor both with four wins, while Sir Michael Stoute has five victories.

In terms of recent age trends the race has been dominated by 3, 4 and 5 year-olds with no horse older than 5 winning in the modern era – mainly because these days horses good enough to have won this are more than likely at stud by the time they hit 6 years-old.

This year’s race has a special vibe attached to it with Ballydoyle’s So You Think, who was runner-up in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot recently, last year’s Epsom Derby winner, Workforce, and, although unlikely to run in favour of the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, Canford Cliffs also holds an entry at this stage.

With Workforce and So You Think set to head to post this will prove a real headache for jockey Ryan Moore, who is the regular pilot for both horses! Moore is, however, retained to ride for Stoute, so will resume his relationship with Workforce, leaving the mount of So You Think up for grabs – Jamie Spencer, Seamie Heffernan and Kieren Fallon are all in the frame.

Looking at the betting the bookmakers are finding it hard to split So You Think and Workforce, while last year’s winner Twice Over is currently a double-figure price.
