June 20, 2011 - PRLog -- The Brown Hotel presents Landships:  A Portrait of Rural Kentucky by Jim Mahanes a new summer Art Show opening Friday, July 15 and continuing through September 2, 2011 in the Gallery at The Brown.

A special Meet the Artist reception is planned opening night from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The reception is free to the public, and will feature complimentary mini hot browns, wine and cheese.

In this exhibit, the paintings are about rural images, from the artist’s ‘place and time’ regarded as Kentucky Landships. “This venue ‘Landships’ conjures up for me stories of my experiences around my home state,” said Jim Mahanes, artist. “My paintings are personal and intended to share with the observer my interest in ‘place’, whether it be ‘place’ I look upon in real time, or, in my minds eye, remembering it from another time. I guess one would say that I am a ‘realist’ but I would call it ‘abstract realism’ in that I take liberties with truth to create my imaginative narrative.” One of the featured paintings is Shaker Wall, watercolor on arches paper, 18"X24".

Gallery at The Brown is an exciting venue showcasing the work of top Kentucky artists. The ever-changing gallery located in the Shop at The Brown is a wonderful place to find truly unique artwork and gifts. Guest services include personal shopping and shipping.

Since 1975, watercolorist Jim Mahanes has painted the American landscape with both realism and imaginative interpretation. A self-taught artist, Mahanes has advanced degrees in the behavioral sciences, and practices family therapy in Louisville, Kentucky. He has been a faculty member of the University of Kentucky for more than 23 years. His art is now a primary focus in his life. According to Jim, "There is a close parallel between painting and therapy. The perceptual skills demanded of a clinician enhance the creative approach to painting and vice versa." Mahanes' watercolors hang in many private and corporate collections, and he is the winner of numerous awards. His works have been exhibited in galleries from Louisville to St. Augustine, Florida.
