June 20, 2011 - PRLog -- The MHEDA Journal Online (http://www.TheMhedaJournal.org), is the leading online magazine for the forklift, conveyor, storage & handling, and general material handling equipment industries. The 2nd Quarter issue of the magazine is online now and features a profile of Doug Barton, a road service technician for Thompson & Johnson Equipment Company (East Syracuse, NY). Barton has worked with electric vehicles since the technology was in its infancy.

Barton is a 32-year veteran of Thompson & Johnson and works primarily with electric forklifts. “During high school, I worked with cars with electronic ignition systems,” Barton says. “After serving in the U.S. Navy and training with electricians, I was hired by Thompson & Johnson to work with electric forklifts that were starting to emerge into the market. I still work with electrics today, although they are hardly recognizable compared to the ones I worked with in high school.”

Since Barton began working with electrics, there have been major advancements in the technology. “High-speed components and computer chips have changed the whole face of the electric truck industry,”

To keep up with the ever-changing technology, Barton has to continuously train and remain current. Very often he spends time before work researching issues he has encountered on manufacturer websites or in manuals. That research allows him to keep his mechanical abilities sharp.

Good mechanical abilities can only take a technician so far, however. “Beyond mechanical ability, I rely on a good set of wrenches, ratchets and other tools,” Barton says. “Also, the ability to communicate effectively with customers is key. Since I am constantly on the road at customer sites, I have to be able to put things in terms that the customer can understand and explain things calmly and effectively if any issues arise. Once I do that, I’ve gained their confidence forever.”
