June 18, 2011 - PRLog -- Meet Mitou Nguyen. He is a current UC Berkeley undergraduate double-majoring in business and psychology, as well as an alumnus from Lycee Francais La Perouse, a French high school in San Francisco.

While many college students return home for the summer to a retail job or some relaxing times spent lounging around the house, Mitou decided to try something different this summer. He is now working for Ivy Insiders, a division of Revolution Prep that gives college undergraduates the tools to open their own SAT tutoring branch in their home city. While some would use this as a way to drive major profits, Mitou sees this as the perfect opportunity to make a positive impact in his community.

“There are students out there who spend thousands of dollars on SAT prep and gain an advantage in college admissions over students who don’t have that kind of money laying around,” he said.

He aims to serve his local community by providing discounts and scholarships for his SAT prep courses, as well as free Mock SAT exams and workshops.

Mitou has a history of serving his community. Starting from the age of seven, he volunteered every summer as a swim instructor at his local pool. He also made a trip to New Orleans in 2008 to help rebuild homes in the St. Bernard district following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

“He’s always been a caring and generous person,” explained his mother, “When he was a kid, I was working as a social worker for children. The desire to make a difference in other people’s lives must have rubbed off on him.”

He will begin hosting free events in mid-June and his first course in late July. He has been working hard since late-May in order to spread the news to high schools in the area, as well as local businesses and organizations.

“Mitou is an enthusiastic, tireless worker driven by the social mission of Ivy Insiders programs,” said Sophia Gilman, his Ivy Insiders Regional Manager. “Even in my group of enterprising, hardworking college students, Mitou stands out both as someone who consistently goes above and beyond and as a charismatic and lucid educator.”

In fact, he carries plenty of valuable teaching experience with him. In addition to his many years serving as a swim instructor, he has spent several years coaching synchronized swimming and teaching dance. He has also tutored his peers in a variety of academic subjects including Spanish, English Literature, Biology, Math, and general writing.

Having scored in the 97th percentile on the SAT, Mitou is confident he can help his students master the seemingly daunting standardized test.

“I took the test only a few years ago myself, so I know exactly what they’re going through,” he said. “I help students realize that the SAT only tests specific skills and concepts. Getting a good score on the SAT isn’t about being a genius; it’s just about knowing what to study.”
