Clutch Webseries A Game Changer

Consumers want free content, creators want to be paid for their work. Some sites, such as YouTube, have sought profit through integrated advertising; others stream their shows with required commercial interruptions. Actor/Director Jonathan Robbins wants nothing of it. He believes releasing his content for free, and ad-free, is the only way it should be. But then who pays for it? He does...for now.

"When the music industry crashed," says Robbins, "people rebelled. They were angry that they were paying so much for music and that it wasn't the artists who saw most of that money anyway. Now, people will pay for music, but that high-cost, low-value stigma hasn't left the film industry."

Robbins believes that by making quality content available for free, people will inherently seek to pay for it if they like it. "People do value the arts, they just don't want to be ripped off," he says. "Why pay for something that isn't satisfying?"
Success of projects on social funding platforms like indiegogo.com proves that people are willing to pay, knowing that the money is going directly to the artists.
"It's a rejection of the distribution system, not the product," says Robbins.

Since the advent of the webseries, power has been put back into the hands of the creators. With the success of auteurs like Felicia Day, whose webseries "The Guild" has just completed Season 5, and netted fame and fortune for the entire cast, filmmakers are excited about the implications. However, those successes are still far and few. For most, think webseries, and a comedy about dating, that has been shot on a small camcorder with no lighting, comes to mind.

Robbins is determined to change that, with the release of "Clutch", an R-Rated, femme-fatale series about a pickpocket who has stepped into a world of trouble. Clutch steps into the game on a different level by combining quality production with strong acting and gripping storytelling. He hopes that with episodes being completely free, people will follow and the money will eventually come. Until then, he's just happy to be doing what he loves.
