Fisher Auto took part in serving the community by sponsoring a blood drive on Friday May 27th to help the Bonfils Memorial Blood Bank. Sixteen people came to Fisher Auto in Boulder, Colorado to donate blood for the drive. From those donors, Bonfils was able to collect 14 units of blood which will be responsible for helping up to 42 different patients. Two of the people who donated blood were also first-time donors, which helped Bonfil expand their family of blood donors that they can contact to continue to help save lives through their donations.

What is Bonfils and How Do They Serve the Community?

Belle Bonfils Memorial Blood Center has been in operation since February 27, 1943, and has been striving to meet the blood needs for the local community and military forces overseas ever since. Today, Bonfils Blood Center has become an important part of the health care system throughout Colorado by supplying blood products to nearly 200 hospitals and health care facilities in Colorado and beyond. Through their headquarters in Denver and six other community donor centers, Bonfils Blood Center collects nearly 154,000 units of blood a year that help save lives through blood, plasma, and platelet transfusions, marrow transfusions, and more.


Why Donate Blood to Bonfils?

Nearly five million people live in Colorado and it is estimated that approximately three and a half million of them are eligible blood donors. Yet, it is estimated that about 100,000 individuals have donated blood to Bonfils in Colorado. The need for blood in health care facilities will never go away, and the only way the demand can be met is through blood donations. Blood donation is important for hospitals and healthcare facilities to maintain a ready supply blood available in all blood types in order to help people who need blood transfusions after accidents, surgeries, and more.  By donating just one pint of blood, an individual can save up to three people.
In order to be eligible to donate blood, the individual must meet the following requirements:

   * Must be at least 18 years of age or 16 or 17 with written parental or guardian consent.
   * Weigh at least 115 pounds for whole blood donations or 110 pounds for platelet and plasma donations.
   * Be in good general health with no history of hepatitis or HIV/AIDS.
   * No history of hepatitis or hepatitis exposure
   * No history of leukemia or lymphoma
   * Have not traveled to malaria exposed countries in the past 12-36 months.
