June 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Pittsburgh, PA, June 15, 2011 -- The growth of Triathlons has inspired new training tools directed at the dedicated triathlete. The latest comes from Global Ride Productions creating a virtual cycling DVD series for triathletes wanting to improve their riding. Not only can this DVD be used by any cyclist, this offering has Fiona Ford, World Triathlon Champion guiding the riders through a cycling training camp in the French Alps.

As the sport of Triathlon continues to grow, so does the interest by triathletes for new ways to extend the training season. Off-season fitness building is of particular interest to this group of new athletes. To that end, traditional cycling training DVDs have become more and more popular among weather bound triathletes. In response to the trend, Global Ride Productions recruited Fiona Ford, a National Champion, Gold Medalist, and a British Triathlon Level 3 Coach to help create a series of virtual rides that focuses on cycling with special attention to this tri-sport group.

“When Gene asked me for some guidance on their Triathlete project, I told him he should just come out to the Triathlon Europe training camp in the French Alps and see for himself. I guess that’s how the whole France series started”. Said the World Champion, Fiona Ford.

In the off season, triathletes can find indoor pools, but running and cycling can become a nightmare due to the road conditions and weather. Most athletes will either use a trainer on their bike setup in the basement playing music or they’ll watch TV reruns to pass the time. The more adventurous will try some local Spinning® classes to at least get out of the house and train with other people. However, the nature of the triathlete is that they want to be out there – outside, and virtual cycling videos are a great way to bridge that natural barrier.

“We loved the idea of filming at Fiona’s camp in the Alps, and it was during the week of the Tour de France – what could be better? This series is clearly our best work to date, and we’ve had Fiona spearhead all of the cross training sections from her home club in the UK, so that we know for sure all the cross training is very TriAthlete specific.” Said Gene Nacey, founder and producer of Global Ride Productions.

There are clearly sections of the ride that are prepared for the 2010 Tour De France, as one can see some of the signage as well as pro rider names painted in the road.

Global Ride also threw another twist in these DVDs by breaking with their traditional single-coach voice-over pattern and having two well-known coaches create a story line through team teaching instead. The result is considerably more interesting than the traditional DVD with a visual workout dashboard and royalty free music.

Tom Scotto, an Elite Level USA Cycling Coach and National Speaker for Cycling Training and Education, goes on to talk about the way he and the company owner pulled of the team teaching “Fiona is an incredible athlete, coach and motivator…this whole effort with her camp and the timing of it with the TDF was pretty inspiring, so Gene and I made sure we created something unique to do her and her coaching business justice.”

What starts out as a “friendly club ride”, quickly ratchets up to a “catch me if you can” pace. The first DVD features work on the flats while presenting you with strategies for those mild hilly climbs. The second DVD is structured as two steady 20-minute training scenarios for power training. The third DVD culminates in attacking two giants in the history books of the Tour De France. The Col Des Aravis has been featured in the TDF 39 times and the Col De La Columbiere, 20 times. These epic climbs leave no doubt about the advanced level of these DVDs. Although, the average rider might just get lost looking at all the awesome scenery.

The NEW Global Ride France DVD releases Mid-June with pre-orders being taken for the collectors box, which is set to ship July 1st. Contact Global Ride for more information.
