New Book "Love and Terror in the Middle East" from former Islamic cult prisoner Frank Romano
Frank Romano, Middle East peace expert and former Islamic cult prisoner has authored a new book titled " Love and Terror in the Middle East," focusing upon his efforts to help bring a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian crisis.
This book details Romano’s arduous journeys between Israel and the West Bank, discussing issues and organizing activities among religious and national groups. Traveling between these areas has been risky: he has been harassed and arrested by the Palestinian police, harassed by Israeli soldiers and attacked by West Bank settlers. Last month, a peace activist friend of Romano’s was murdered in the West Bank. In addition, Frank’s efforts in the region have cost him a marriage, another long romantic relationship and close contact with his children.
“I wrote this book to share with a wide audience my belief in the possibility of peace through grassroots activities in Israel and Palestine,” Romano explains. “A lot of the Middle East conflict is due to misunderstanding and lack of communication between religious groups, so I want to encourage people to begin organizing in their own communities to help break down those barriers.”
“Most books on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are written by intellectuals or pundits hundreds of miles from the epicenter of conflict, and they tend to focus on such things as the history, politics and conflicting views of the situation held by various groups. "Love And Terror in the Middle East", however, is a memoir of a man working in the field, face to face with people from all kinds of factions, including extremists on both sides. Israeli, American and Palestinian politicians make many grandiose statements—and this has continued in 2011—but I truly believe that bringing real peace has to involve all the area groups—including the hard-liners.
“We need to do some serious re-programming of the area’s Jewish, Christian and Muslim people, as was done, very successfully, with the Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland. The tragic difference in the situations is that the contesting parties in Ireland were ultimately persuaded to lay down their arms for the sake of a peaceful solution, whereas everyone in Israel and Palestine—despite their desire for peace—is still armed to the teeth.”
Sacramento, CA attorney Craig Paul declares, "Dr. Romano has written an insightful and soul-searching book in describing his and others’ efforts to try to bring diverse peoples together in a region long known for conflict."
About Author Frank Romano
Frank Romano graduated from Santa Rosa (CA) High School, earned a B.A. in political science from University of California at Davis, was awarded a J.D. from Golden Gate Law School and joined the California Bar. He formed his own law firm and specialized in immigration cases and tort law for victims of negligence. Then, Romano transferred his hunger for fighting for victims in the courts to fighting for victims in the Middle East. He earned a Master’s degree in international law from the University of Paris (France) and a Ph.D. from the Sorbonne, before joining the Marseille Bar. In addition to practicing labor law, he has taught law, literature, history and philosophy at the University of Paris West for the past decade. His capture and imprisonment by Islamic extremists in 1978, and his harrowing escape from them, was the subject of his book "Storm Over Morocco", the recent fourth edition of which contains two chapters describing his peace efforts. Romano has also written a book in French about antitrust policies and a book of poetry entitled "Crossing Over". Considered an authority on Middle East conflict, he has published many articles, spoken at American and European conferences and led scores of peace marches and interfaith events in Israel and the West Bank.
