By: John Palmer Art Palmer states, "To be selected as the sole juror for such a high-level and well-respected, historic art competition was one of the highlights of my career. Although the process was certainly tough, it was amazingly rewarding at the same time. As an artist, I know how it feels to be both rejected and rewarded. The advice I would give to all artists is that the key is to just keep trying, creating and evolving your art." The Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center hosts the Michigan Fine Arts Competition each spring since 1982 when the Detroit Institute of Arts turned the statewide competition over to the BBAC. For 28 years, approximately 500 artists from the entire state of Michigan have entered the competition annually. Many competition winners have gone onto national prominence as a result of the competition. Each year, the MFAC is juried by an artist or curator of distinction, who selects current work of the highest quality from across the state. Cash awards support Michigan's finest working artists, while recognizing the contribution the artists make to the cultural fabric of Michigan. In March of 2011, John Ross Palmer traveled to Michigan to select the winners. He personally appeared at the awards gala and gave a lecture to an audience of over 100 art enthusiasts about his art movement of Escapism, the history of his career and his inspiration to create art.
