Susan Murphy Milano and Lisa Bloom Talk THINK!

What Has Been the Fallout of the "Dumbing Down" of Modern Women?

June 14, 2011 - PRLog -- In just one generation, how did women become so smart and yet so ditzy? Acclaimed national television legal analyst Lisa Bloom confronts the disturbing paradox of 21st-century womanhood and its dire consequences in her new book, THINK: Straight Talk for Women to Stay Smart in a Dumbed-Down World (Vanguard Press; June 1, 2011; ISBN: 978-1-59315-659-6; $25.99; Hardcover). Backed by extensive research, Bloom indicts the tabloid media and society’s focus on beauty over substance for turning millions of intelligent American females into glitz-, glam-, and gossip-obsessed narcissists who are, to quote the author, “dazzlingly ignorant about some critically important things.”

Without sugarcoating the facts, Lisa Bloom reveals how women’s distraction from critical issues and critical thinking is detrimental to not only themselves. By wasting their minds on trivial nonsense, women are hurting countless women and girls—victims of oppression, poverty, violence, and injustice—around the world and close to home, too. Among many critically important things, THINK compels women to think about:

The astounding financial, emotional, and physical toll of women’s growing dependence on cosmetic procedures. One and a half million cosmetic surgeries are performed annually in the United States. And serious complications, like respiratory and heart problems or internal bleeding, occur in 1 in 299 cases. “Women are literally dying to be beautiful,” Bloom observes;
The devastating global impact of women’s lack of interest in serious global news. “News directors tell me that they have to run stories on celebrity sex scandals, fashion, and new plastic surgery techniques because doing so is the only way to capture the female market,” Bloom attests. “Wouldn’t it be great if the only way for the local news to increase their female ratings were to cover climate change in depth, to report on the modern-day abolitionists who are struggling to free enslaved girls, to update us on the millions of girls who don’t go to school at all, and to report on any number of other real stories that are worthy of our attention?”
For women who are outraged and motivated to make a personal change and a world of difference, THINK provides a realistic action plan, with very specific solutions. Here’s an overview:

Reclaim time to think. For starters, Bloom strongly advises freeing up more time to think by doing less housework, with practical tips on how to farm out or delegate the job;
Read constantly and read the good stuff. Bloom makes a powerful, appealing case for reading books—absorbing, life-transforming novels as well as topical, eye-opening nonfiction (reading list included);
Use your newfound time and knowledge to take charge of your life. In the wondrous age of Google, Bloom urges every woman to check her own facts and face those facts head on; and
Engage, connect, take a stand, and act. Bloom passionately advocates volunteering. “Make your life a blessing to others,” she encourages every woman, “and you will glow.”
Straight-talking, hard-hitting, and inspiring, THINK is an urgent, must-heed reading book for all women who have become distracted by fluff and disconnected from what’s meaningful—and from themselves. As Lisa Bloom stresses to each woman: “Your critical thinking skills are desperately needed right now for your own good as well as for the sake of your community, your country, and your planet.”
