June 13, 2011 - PRLog -- NEWARK, NJ – The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development (CUEED) at Rutgers Business School and the Obama Administration hosted the first ever Urban Entrepreneurship Summit bringing together entrepreneurs, private capital, government and the academic resources of Rutgers Business School. The summit sought to find solutions to create wealth in the urban community by transferring business know-how to people trying to make their businesses succeed.

“By building strong businesses in our American cities, people will spend money here, create jobs here, and revitalize economic development to help entrepreneurs compete in the global economy,” said dt ogilvie, the Founding Director of (CUEED) at Rutgers Business School – Newark and New Brunswick.

CUEED is the first research center of its kind in the nation to integrate scholarly works with private capital, government, and non-profit sectors to develop citywide resources and bring renewed economic growth and vitality through urban entrepreneurship. “We are fostering a new generation of urban entrepreneurs who actively seek socially conscious urban renaissance,” said ogilvie.

A concentration in entrepreneurship directed by CUEED’s leadership, including ogilvie, Jerome Williams, Prudential Chair in Business and Research Director for CUEED, and Jeffrey Robinson, Assistant Director for CUEED, encourages MBA students to generate new sources of enterprise, develop innovative business ideas, and create new jobs. Students learn the skills to launch new businesses, or take on business development and other leadership roles at growth-oriented organizations.

The Urban Entrepreneurship Summit marks an important step towards creating long-term public-private partnerships that support current entrepreneurs and will spark the next generation of urban entrepreneurs who will strengthen the economy, create sustainable economic opportunities, and compete globally.

Rutgers Business School’s Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development (CUEED) and the White House Business Council, Office of Public Engagement and Domestic Policy Council partnered with Startup America Partnership, Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, Russell Simmons, the Fund for Public Advocacy – Office of the New York City Public Advocate, Operation HOPE, the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), for a day-long summit on ways to strengthen urban entrepreneurship.
