The Envelope Please - Yes, the Green One

July 30, 2011 - PRLog -- Have you ever considered that the walls and roof are also truly the "foundation" of any building?  Yes, there is the basic foundation under our buildings but not much thought seems to be given to the fact that when a terrible storm erupts in our community that many times, the only thing left of a building is the foundation.  http://polygreenbuildings.com

Why are we occupying buildings where only the foundation survives?  Whether the buildings are residential, commercial, or industrial the bottom line is that buildings are the means of protecting us and our assets against the perils of outside forces.  http://www.polygreenbuildings.com/WALLS-FOUNDATIONS.html

The key words are "outside forces." What are these perilous outside forces?  Anything that threatens or successfully harms the occupants within a building.  To name a few, high winds and debris from the FORCE of tornados, hurricanes, hail.  Dangerous high or low temperatures adversely affect unprotected building walls and roofs.

Congratulations to you if you are planning to build "green" by using natural, local materials and are not leaving a dirty carbon footprint.  But, will your green building withstand the powerful forces of severe weather?  Many of us remember the story of those 3 characters who built some of the first green homes of straw, sticks and bricks.  Sound familiar?

Bricks were a great idea during those building times, but as you have seen on news/weather reports, the reporters are shocked to find that even the brick buildings are devastated by high winds.  

Build Green!  But, build better buildings with insulating concrete forms or tilt up walls and don't stop there.  Add on the concrete roof and solar panels.  Of course, you would not want to have all of these strong energy efficient materials and not have sustainable, energy efficient windows and doors.  Further, just add the radiant heated floor panels and you're all set -- safe and sound in your green building -- envelope intact!   http://www.polygreenbuildings.com/super-strong-windows-do...  

Building is faster; noise and environmental pollution is kept very low; saves tremendously on utility bills and you can use any type of exterior finishing you desire.  You can use stucco, even mud if you'd like, bricks, stone, siding and even wood.  Build a log cabin with ICFs then finish with the logs inside and out.

Plan and Build your Green Envelope and save lives.  More severe weather is on the way.  Why would you not want do this?  The Green Envelope, please....
