Romeo Gigli was born in 1949, Castel Bolognese Italy. Romeo Gigli comes from a wealthy aristocratic family, he draws on a rich culture imbibed from antiquarian books in his father's library. His muses are the Empress Theodora from Byzanthium, the young and beautiful women depicted in the mosaics of Ravenna's Byzantine Churches, and Piero della Francesca's virginal beauties.


In 1979 he settled in New York and worked at Dimitri's atelier, where he learnt many technical secrets of fashion design. In 1986 he launched his first collection and he took the fashion world by storm. In 1989 for SS colletion he started to collaborate with Ermenegildo Zegna Group for the production and distribution of the Mens ready to wear collection, which is today available in the highest quality stores worldwide, including 75 in Italy and 25 in the USA.


Gigli has become a leader in the fashion world with his emphasis on languid lines, exotic colors and textures, and fresh use of historical influences. His work has been described as "dramatic, romantic, and ethereal." His collections often include long and short tunics with natural, curvy tailoring; long coats with shawl collars; short, body-conscious jackets in unusual proportions; and simple, narrow trousers.
