Doonan Architects Sets the Stage for Lowell General Chelmsford Expansion

June 9, 2011 - PRLog -- Lowell General Hospital recently celebrated the ceremonial groundbreaking of a new facility with conceptual design and permitting by local architect, Christopher Doonan of Doonan Architects. The building which sits between another hospital property and an existing medical office leased by Lowell General Hospital will expand the hospital’s suburban Chelmsford campus with the creation of a state-of-the-art, 30,000 square foot, medical office building and a 347-car parking deck.

Christopher Doonan, in describing the challenge, stated, “In creating the schematic design for this new building, our goal was to weave together the characteristics of two existing buildings in order to create a true campus for healthcare delivery. We are proud of the outcome of our design and to be part of this important project to further the delivery of quality healthcare to the Lowell and Chelmsford region.  Lowell General very much works in a team approach.  At Doonan Architects, we’re proud to be an ongoing member of that team.”  

Lowell General Hospital's president and chief executive officer, Normand E. Deschene stated, "This $10 million dollar expansion will bring an extensive array of new quality, leading edge outpatient services to the Chelmsford community and beyond; improve access to medical care and physician practices; and unify our campus, turning Lowell General Chelmsford into the premiere outpatient facility in the Merrimack Valley."

The success of the permitting process, which began with the Town of Chelmsford convening its three governing boards: Planning Board, Board of Appeals and the Conservation Commission, was due in part to Doonan Architects' careful design of elements such as the parking deck, connecting walkways and aesthetic considerations for the building. The two level parking facility is the first structure of its kind in the town and having an acceptable design that fit with the campus was essential to approval.

Doonan Architects' conceptual design is being further developed and the building constructed by the design/build company Pro Con, Inc. of Hooksett, NH and is expected to be complete in summer 2012.
