June 8, 2011 - PRLog -- Una Burke is a handbags and accessories designer and artist. She specialises in leather and each piece is hand crafted from vegetable tanned leather. Una Burke uses traditional leatherworking techniques to produce her abstract creations of sculptural shapes of the female body.


In her latest 2011 collection of body accessories, she has examined the cause and effect of human trauma and the way that emotional barriers are often built as a means of protection. She referred to the work of artists, photographers and designers such as Hans Bellmer, Anthony Gormley, Alexander McQueen, Erwin Olaf, as well as looking at the casts of the victims of Pompeii. The entire collection made from undyed vegetable tanned leather which is reminiscent of Caucasian flesh.


Una Burke was born and grown up in Galway, Ireland. She helped her mother stitching on the sewing machine by the age of five. Then when she was about 15 years of age she started to repeatedly have strange sort of visions. These were models walking up and down a catwalk wearing really beautifully tailored or flowing garments. For her and it was the point when she knew that she would go on to be a fashion designer.


She studied for an MA in Fashion Artefacts at Cordwainers which is the famous accessories school now gobbled up by The London College of Fashion. The public first became aware of her work at Vauxhall Fashion Scout during February’s London Fashion Week, where she was exhibiting. Also her work’s been spotlighted in The Guardian Newspaper and Vogue Italia.  Her pieces also have exhibited in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Austria and they have also been used by stylists and photographers from Los Angeles to Namibia, for magazine editorials, advertising campaigns, books, photography exhibitions, short films and music videos.
