June 8, 2011 - PRLog -- It is quite interesting to have a journey of the art of canvas oil painting. There are many periods which proved to be more receptive of art forms than others. It is believed that this art form have came from Afghanistan. In fac, it was not used for art purposes when the process was first created. But artists knew the potential oil painting possesed very fast. The art form traveled from Afghanistan through Europe and finally reach the central Europe, There are records in 15 century that European artists using this from of painting. And during the the renaissance and post renaissance periods in Europe and the English Mainland, this form came into its own.

The term oil painting shows the use of oil in the paintings. Take a example, the pigments which artists used to paint are rather the base oil medium or mixed with oil. Linseed Oil is the most commonly used. it is harvested from Flax seeds that are simple to get. A few other oils used in the place of Linseed Oil include poppy seed oil and Walnut Oil. Mixing the dry pigments in oil helps to creat a color version that no other medium could compete. Different oils produce different gloss intensities. The sheen can therefore vary depending on the oil used to mix the pigments. The oil- pigment mixture is painted onto a canvas. Canvas Art means that they use canvas as a base. A thinner material uanable to sustain and retain the color and effect.

Oil painting is not directly done on a canvas. Artists need to sketch the design or scenery by a pencil or charcoal drawing implement. And then the oil paints added slowly. The paints do not dry quickly, so it would take some time to completed an oil painting. If artist want to speed up, they will mix a quantity of turpentine in the paints because turpentine dry faster. Nearly no artist complete oil paintings  in one layer, they ususally paint many layers in order to have great effect.

Every subsequent oil paints layer should have a higher content of oil which actually quicken the drying process. Given that the paints are rendered heavy by the thick oil base, drying oil paintings requires real skill and patience. The oil paints do not dry by evaporation, Oil paintings dry by oxidation.

There are also many other mediums used in canvas paintings. Resins and wax are the most common. They both add to the effect of the oil pants and at the same time affect the sheen and texture of the oil paints. There is one more step which helps to protect the oil painting which is coated with a varnish layer. Only by that the painting can be considered finished.
