June 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Coral Springs, FL: June 7th, 2011. Former Coral Springs Mayor, Scott J Brook, has begun his race for Florida House District 96 in 2012 with an agenda that focuses on our community with a commitment to minimize the “politics” of politics.

As Former Mayor Brook states, “We must ensure all of our local stakeholders are heard in order to take our government to the next level.  We reached great success in Coral Springs in part because of the collaboration between government, citizens, volunteers and our front-line workers.  Our future and our children’s future are at stake.  We must surpass political rhetoric and make this OUR RACE.  My time will be focused much more on public service than on politics. The issues that our community faces affect Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike. I want to connect with people, empower them to connect with, and play a vital role in, government and follow the successful model of collaboration we achieved in Coral Springs.”

He added, “Everyone needs to have a stronger voice.  Whether that is the young student, the senior citizen or the small business person, I intend to listen to their issues and concerns and will give my all to help them find solutions.”

This is not just idle election talk from former Mayor Brook; he is already making inroads in connecting the community.  Last year, he pioneered a Teen Task Force in Coral Springs that is committed to enlighten and inspire the City’s youth to make healthy choices while positive role models exert POSITIVE Peer Pressure.  The group meets on a regular basis and discusses topics covering a multitude of healthy choices, including lifestyle, food, community service, not using drugs, family values, accountability and understanding consequences.  Often, half the room at the meetings is made up of teenagers who contribute their thoughts and opinions.  The teenagers enjoy being heard and respected by their elders. Outside of the meetings, these teenagers exemplify leadership skills that can make a difference for all of our children in the communities they live in.  The Teen Task Force is one of many innovations that Brook has created to lift families in the area and address tough issues like violence and drugs.

As education reform is one of his core issues, Brook said “I am not a fan of the FCAT for elementary schools students as you cannot “test” a child to become great.  We must focus on teaching, which requires a monetary focus on paying our teachers a solid wage that competes with the top states in the country.  We must also preserve Bright Futures for our youth in college and admit that our children from VPK through secondary schools deserve to be invested in with proper funding.”

Through Brook's almost nine years of public service, he created the first Citizens’ Government Committee in the City of Coral Springs and began a tradition in which city officials create office hours to meet with citizens openly and in the public at restaurants and coffee shops.  He has also earned a solid reputation for being accessible and visible in the community.

Scott J. Brook is running as a Democrat.  He is married to Brenda, with whom he has raised five children.  Brook is also a young grandfather, but prefers to be called “Poppy” by his grandson. Brook runs a full-service law firm in Coral Springs and owns a community service networking organization, Premier Networking Alliance (PNA).

The Democratic Primary will take place in August of 2012.  District 96 currently includes Coral Springs, Tamarac, and parts of Sunrise, Lauderhill and North Lauderdale. After finishing two successful terms as Mayor of Coral Springs, during which the City was the first-ever winner of the prestigious National Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award, Brook started his campaign early with a vision to reform education and government in the state while making sure our seniors have the security and voice in Tallahassee that they deserve.
