June 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Amnis, the productivity and improvement specialists, have announced a new study: End of Life Care – A Community Nursing Perspective. The study has been undertaken in collaboration with The Saunders Education Centre, part of NHS hospice Arthur Rank House Specialist Palliative Care Services.

Presenting new insights into a range of end of life care issues, the study centres on a case history from the point of view of a sister working with a long-term palliative care patient, initially in the patient's home and subsequently in a hospice. It covers a broad spectrum of issues, including physical, spiritual and perceived psychological pain, spousal care, end of life tools and communication skills.

Cathy Alban-Jones, Head of Education at Arthur Rank House, said, "The study will be useful to anyone working with patients and their families delivering end of life care. It provides an excellent insight into the challenges often faced by healthcare professionals in the community when caring for a patient and family approaching the end of life."

Les Pyle, Amnis Chairman, commented, "Amnis were delighted to work with Arthur Rank on this study. With our extensive experience in working across a wide range of healthcare pathways, including those relating to end of life and palliative care, the project was a natural choice for us."

Amnis has worked on many projects that impact on End of Life care, including establishing community based teams working with care homes, developing Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) approaches in A&E giving doctors access to specialist advice to help them avoid unnecessary admissions, and setting up single points of access (SPA) to provide information rapidly to professionals working in a variety of settings.

Projects like these can deliver significant improvements in patient care and, at the same time significant cost reductions. "To realise such improvements, the various organisations involved need to start working together in new ways," noted Mark Eaton, Managing Director of Amnis. "Facilitating the necessary changes in working practices is generally very difficult indeed for the organisations involved, and that's where Amnis makes a real difference."
