June 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Generation Ed (GenEd), a non-profit subsidiary of Innovative Study Techniques (IST), will launch its debate club in Prince George’s County, Maryland, which will introduce students to different styles of debate.   Registration will be open on Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at IST’s Largo Learning Center at 9701 Apollo Drive, Suite 221, Largo, MD.  There is no fee to join the club, however only 25 highly motivated students in Grades 4-12 will be selected. Final selections will be determined by June 30, 2011.

The idea of a Debate Club was generated by parents of students attending private schools in the Washington, DC metropolitan area who were seeking a forum to encourage open discussion of critical national and global issues in a spirit of cooperation and tolerance, but in the county in which they live.  “We are delighted to be able to respond responsibly and substantively to parents with the educational value that is gained through learning how to argue appropriately," said Riche Holmes Grant, Esq., Executive Director of GenEd.

Debate topics will flow from issues that directly or indirectly impact students’ lives and will be designed to intensely engage students in developing clarity of thought; research and analytical skills; depth of reading and comprehension; and, clear, logical and fluent speaking skills to ultimately help frame diverse points of view for debate. Holmes Grant said, “I am excited to help these students gain skills and deeper level confidence they will carry with them far beyond high school into the global working world.”

Holmes Grant, a former Constitutional Law Debate Coach at Legal Outreach in New York City while at Columbia Law, and two Columbia Law colleagues, including a National Moot Court Competition and National Debate Champion, will provide leadership for articulation and development of debate standards for the Club as well as monitor and assess the development of individual debaters.
