Dr Blumenthal’s Prostate Health Seminar is Now Available on HIFU/Prostate Cancer Website

May 31, 2011 - PRLog -- On April 28th Dr Blumenthal held a seminar on prostate health at the HCGH Wellness Center, Medical Pavilion at Howard County. The four part video seminar and a HIFU testimonial from the seminar are now available on his website, www.marylandprostatecancer.com and http://www.youtube.com/CMUAHIFU. The seminar briefly covers rectal exams, prostate screenings, PSA blood test, prostate cancer, prostate cancer treatment options, and treatment side effects. HIFU was most certainly the main purpose of the seminar and Dr Kevin Blumenthal answers questions from the audience throughout, going into detail on how HIFU works, its benefits, success rates, who qualifies for it, and its side effects.
HIFU is the innovative, radiation free, non-surgical, minimally invasive, outpatient procedure, that uses high intensity ultra-sound waves (hence the name HIFU). Although HIFU was developed in the United States in the 1950’s and has been used to treat enlarged prostate (BPH) and fibroids in the uterus (which it has been FDA approved for), its use in treating prostate cancer is relatively new. Some of the benefits of HIFU are its high success rate and it can be repeated if another form of treatment such as surgery or radiation fails.
Dr Blumenthal goes further into detail using animation, charts, and explaining how the HIFU procedure is done and what recovery is like.  He also explains how HIFU is not yet offered in the US for treatment of prostate cancer but is informative while he explains where and how the HIFU procedure is carried out in other countries just as it would in the United States.  Dr. Blumenthal uses the Sonablate 500 when performing the HIFU prostate cancer procedure.

Dr. Kevin Blumenthal obtained his undergraduate degree from The University of Virginia, and graduated medical school from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia and then returned to the metropolitan area where he completed his combined general surgery and urology residency at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. There he received special training in laparoscopy and robotic surgery.  He is only one of a select few surgeons in the Mid-Atlantic region trained in the use of HIFU procedure for prostate cancer.  Dr. Blumenthal joined Central Maryland Urology in 2009 and shortly thereafter founded the Central Maryland Urology (CMUA) HIFU Center making the knowledge and availability of HIFU possible for men with prostate cancer.
