Math Education Pays Off for Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School Students

May 31, 2011 - PRLog -- Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School (, celebrating 50 years as a coeducational, pre-K through grade eight day school serving over 15 communities in the California South Bay and Peninsula Area, today announced that seven of its students placed in the top 20 nationwide at the 2011 Math Kangaroo Competition. The school also served as a host testing center on Thursday, March 17, 2011 for the popular international non-selective mathematics competition for students in grades 1st through 12.

The students who placed in the top 20 nationwide are: Antonio Caceres (4th grade), Robert Chien (4th grade), Katy Chu (3rd grade), Mario Goranov (4th grade), Cedric Nowatzyk (4th grade), Matthew Quan (3rd grade) and Sian Smith (4th grade).

This year there were over 6,000,000 students in 50 countries who participated in the competition. In the USA, 6,500 students in grades 1 to 12 took the multiple choice test called Math Kangaroo. There were a total of 988 third grade participants and 987 fourth grade participants in the USA.

“We congratulate each of our students for their effort to master mathematical skills and to meet the challenge,” said Head of School Harry V. McKay, Jr. “With our focus on academics and character, we’re proud to have created a supportive environment to foster their success.”

Prior to the competition, Saint Andrew’s students were given a math assessment and those who scored in the top five percent of the assessment were invited to participate in the competition. Saint Andrew’s provided coaching sessions after school from November until the competition took place on March 17.

“We’re happy to be participating in Math Kangaroo,” said Victoria Trevor, Head of Lower School, Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School. “Math Kangaroo helps the students to develop their skills and enjoy mathematics even more.”
